Installing new flooring is one of the best ways to improve your home’s value, comfort, and appearance. Whether you’re getting tile in your kitchen, hardwood in your living room, or carpet in the bedrooms, a little preparation goes a long way.
At Floor Stars, we help homeowners across Eastern Iowa enjoy stress-free flooring installations. Here are some practical tips to help you prepare your space before our crew arrives.
1. Clear the Room
Before your installers arrive, move furniture, rugs, plants, and any loose items out of the area. If you need help moving heavy pieces, let us know ahead of time — we may be able to assist.
Tip: Don’t forget about closets, built-in shelves, or wall hangings in the workspace.
2. Disconnect Electronics & Appliances
For flooring in rooms with electronics or appliances (like living rooms or kitchens), unplug everything and safely move cords out of the way.
For kitchen floor installs, disconnect dishwashers, refrigerators, or stoves if they need to be moved.
3. Remove Baseboards & Trim (if needed)
Depending on your project, we may remove and reinstall your baseboards. If you plan to do this yourself, remove them carefully and label each piece so they can be put back easily.
4. Protect Adjacent Areas
Dust and debris can travel, especially during tile or hardwood installations. Use plastic sheets or painter’s tape to seal off nearby rooms or vents if needed.
5. Plan Pet and Kid-Free Zones
For safety, we recommend keeping pets and children away from the workspace. Some adhesives and tools aren’t safe for little hands (or paws).
6. Ensure Flooring Materials Are in the Space Before Install
Some floors like hardwood and LVP need to “acclimate” to your home’s humidity. We recommend storing materials in the room for at least 24–48 hours before install.
We’ll coordinate delivery and timing with you so everything goes smoothly.
7. Ask Questions Beforehand
If you have questions about timing, materials, or layout, don’t wait until the last minute. Our team is happy to talk through every detail with you.
